2-Step Guide To Temporarily Treating Your Cavities At Home Using Natural Ingredients

If you have cavities in your teeth that you are waiting to have filled, you may be experiencing some achiness or pain, especially if they are deep enough to expose your teeth's pulp. If so, use the following two-step guide to temporarily treat your cavities at home using natural ingredients found in pharmacies, supermarkets and natural health stores.

About The Ingredients

The peppermint oil used in both steps of this treatment serves more than one purpose. It acts as a natural antiseptic and astringent to clean the areas in and around the cavities, as well as kills germs that could lead to an infection. The peppermint oil also has pain-relieving properties that help numb any exposed nerves inside your teeth.

The allicin contained in garlic is a powerful, natural antibacterial that also keeps the teeth from infection. It also helps stimulate circulation, giving a natural boost to your body's immune response.

Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. It reduces any swelling in your gums and thoroughly cleanses the area of debris and germs.

Dental wax serves as a temporary filling for the tooth. When applied correctly, it covers the cavities until the next treatment, shielding your teeth from bacteria and food particles.

Step 1:  Rinse With A Homemade Mouthwash

The first step in your home remedy is to rinse with a homemade mouthwash containing salt, garlic and peppermint oil. You will also need two glasses, cheesecloth and a garlic mincer or knife.

After you have brushed your teeth as usual, crush two cloves of garlic using the mincer. If you do not have one, lay a clove of garlic under the flat part of the knife's blade, and use the palm of your hand to crush the clove. Repeat with the other one, and place them in one of the glasses.

Fill the glass with a quarter cup of water, and let the garlic soak for half an hour. The juices from the cloves will infuse into the liquid. Spread a piece of cheesecloth over the second glass, and carefully pour the garlic and water through the fabric. Remove the cheesecloth, and discard the garlic cloves.

Add one tablespoon of salt to the garlic water, and let it dissolve for about five minutes. Then, add 5 drops of peppermint oil, stirring between each drop to mix well.

Rinse your mouth with the liquid for a minute, and spit it out. Rinse your mouth with warm water, then go on to the next step.

Step 2:  Apply A Ball Of Dental Wax Coated With Peppermint Oil

After treating your mouth, it is time to create a peppermint-coated temporary filling for each cavity. For this step, you will also need a small saucer and a pair of tweezers.

Place 10 drops of peppermint oil in the center of the saucer. For each filling needed, pinch off a small piece of wax from the can using your tweezers. Then, place the wax between your forefinger and thumb, and roll it into a ball. Place the ball in the oil, then repeat until you have the fillings you require.

Let the wax sit for five minutes, then use the tweezers to roll them over to soak the other side. Place a filling over each cavity, and firmly press it onto the tooth. Smooth out the wax with your fingertip so it coats the surface of the tooth surrounding the cavity.

Using the above treatment twice a day can help ease any pain you experience from your cavities, as well as help prevent infection. However, if you notice an increase in the intensity of pain or think your tooth may be infected, you may want to make an appointment with a dentist like Scott W. Murphy, D.M.D., P.A. as soon as possible so they can examine and treat it promptly.
